As an 18 year old Richard “Dick” Stack was a hard working ambitious salesman at a small Army and Navy store in Binghamton, New York. He was asked by the owner, what his opinion would be of adding a line of hiking and fishing items to the stores product line. Being an avid fisherman, Dick was enthused with the idea and set out to create a business plan for the owner to overview. After reviewing the business plan the owner told young Dick that he would not make it as a merchant.
Later that evening Dick recounted the story to his grandmother. She without hesitation gave Dick her life savings of $300 and told Dick to pursue his dreams.The year was 1948 and Dick Stack was in business running his first bait and tackle business. By 1958, with the urging of a loyal clientele Dick added a number of other items to his product line, that represents a large portion of what is carried in today’s Dick’s Sporting Goods. Dick’s Sporting Goods is now over 300 stores strong and is a leader in providing an extensive line of sport items that include Golf, Seasonal Sports, Outdoor, Clothing and Foot Wear.
